Paul Chin begins closure

Following the release of his full-length debut, and two years of touring to and from Asia, Toronto producer and self-proclaimed “obsesseive distiller of the human experience” Paul Chin returns to catch the world up on how it’s been going since 2023’s And Under Heaven We Are All Made of Water; which is to say, “it’s been better”.

His new EP, simply titled PROFESSIONAL, is the opening chapter in a public presentation, actually heralding closure to a long season of personal grief over friendships unceremoniously ended. Chin says of the project: “I underwent what felt like a record number of ‘friendship breakups’ during the pandemic, and felt like I was wholly unequipped to even understand what was happening! It wasn’t until I started hearing from others that the same thing was happening to them too, around the same time, that I realised we as a society really don’t talk about how friendship works enough”.

PROFESSIONAL also sees the producer, DJ, and Sanzuwu Group label head step out from behind the boards at his most vulnerable. Rather than calling in assists from the rolodex of talented friends he’s historically collaborated with – customary for his peers in the producer community – he personally gets on the mic, gliding over drum-n-bass, free jazz breaks, dusty soul loops, and anthemic trap production to spill his hard-won therapy breakthroughs, and lessons for coming to closure over folks who won't be around anymore.
